IT position

Candidate will be responsible for supporting Staff with a wide variety of computer related issues in a non-profit scientific setting located in a NW neighborhood of Washington DC. The systems administrator would be responsible for day-to-day operation and maintenance of desktop computers (Windows, Mac, and Linux), printers, and network equipment in addition to the setup and maintenance of productivity and scientific software. The individual will assist in the administration and development of server systems including directory, file, database, mail and web servers. Candidate must possess good customer service and help-desk skills, the ability to work independently and effectively communicate with the user base. This job provides IS professionals the opportunity to be exposed to and explore newer technologies, programming and a wide variety of software systems, and gain experience with systems administration in a production environment.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

  • Setup and troubleshoot network, hardware and software
  • Assist in day-to-day operations and maintenance of all computer systems, including computational clusters
  • Configure and troubleshoot email, calendaring, and messaging clients
  • Analyze, prepare, and run backup of network and user data
  • Analyze firewall, server, performance and other network logs as required
  • Assist staff on issues relating to general information technology
  • Assist in providing training to users on software applications, new technology systems and computer policies to enhance job performance
  • Analyze trends, devise and manage changes and communicate these needs to staff

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience with desktop and server (Linux, OS X, and Windows) environments
  • Application configuration and troubleshooting experience
  • Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively using terminology that users can understand
  • Ability to respond to issues quickly, multi-task and meet deadlines
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior help-desk experience
  • Hardware interfacing and programming for scientific research instruments.
  • λWeb and application programming experience for system automation are a plus
  • Experience with system development including building servers
  • Experience with Python, Perl, Java, Php, and Ruby 
  • Minimum of 30 credits or Associate degree in Information Systems or related field. Relevant computer support experience with a professional certification in networking or system administration may be substituted for educational requirement
